Literary Analysis Step-by-Step Guide and Help Source
Literary Analysis Step-by-Step Guide and Help Source Students are often asked to write a literary analysis because this type of task makes you think how and why a short story, a poem, a novel or a play was written. While writing, you have to keep in mind that author always makes certain choices in his work for a reason. You have to point them out and try to explain these choices, but at the same time, you have to know how to analyze a piece of text from your own perspective. In this post, I will tell you more about how to write a literary analysis so stay tuned. Definition Literary analysis is a practice of looking closely at small parts to understand how they affect the whole, as well as examining and sometimes evaluating a piece of literature. It focuses on how the author uses characters, plot and structure, setting and a lot of other techniques to create a meaning. You have to remember that the point of literary analysis is not about getting to the end of the essay quickly, but rather about the process that makes you understand the work of art as a whole and appreciate it more. How to write a Literary Analysis? Before you start writing, take a few moment to read the task very carefully. Usually, teachers will point out certain aspects that you have to pay attention to, like specific characters, figurative speech and a subject of discussion. While reading a text, take a pen and make small annotations to analyze what you are reading right away. This will help you to remember everything you think about while reading so you donââ¬â¢t have to read the text once again. Make bullet points of the most important events, place of action, characters, antagonist, protagonist, subject, figurative language and system of images. Also, you can add the number of pages to find your annotations fast. How to start a Literary Analysis? Look through your notes once again before you finish working with the material. Make sure you know what you have to write about. Sometimes, a teacher can ask you to analyze the text in general forms, sometimes make an analysis of the certain aspect of the text. Decide on the topics that you want to discuss in the analysis. Analyze the narrative and style of writing. If you analyze a scientific essay, you can analyze the authors style. Discuss the setting. Determine the time and place of the event, the geographical location and other details that are given to the reader for the better understanding of the work. Discuss the authors writing style. You can refer to the same audience as the author did himself. It will be more reliable. Discuss the characters of the work; the presence of a protagonist and antagonist. Think about whether they are imitating other literary characters, how stereotyped they are and their dynamics along the way. Select several topics or a thesis statement for discussion. Pick some quotes to insert into your analysis. Add counter-arguments. Discuss the controversial aspects of the work. Determine the relationship between the work and the readership. Formulate a thesis statement. This sentence (or sentences) reveal the main ideas of your essay and answers the question or questions posed in your work. To write the correct thesis, think about these things: What am I trying to prove? What arguments do I have? How to arrange my arguments/evidence? Literary Analysis Outline. Introduction: Hook, or attention-catcher. A question, quote or statement that will grab readerââ¬â¢s attention. Include the name of the author, title of the book/text you are analyzing, and any other information that you think is important. Background information. Tell why the prompts are relevant or important. Context. Here you need to write about how the essay prompt relates to the piece of literature you are reading. Claim. This is the answer to the question that is being asked in your essay. Body Paragraphs (usually at least 2): Topic Sentence . In each paragraph identify reasons why your claim is true. Support it with a two or three quotes that will be presented as evidence from the text. Add your own commentary to each quote, which will explain how the text supports your topic sentence. Each paragraph should have a conclusion, which will sum up your argument and explain how it connects back to the thesis. Conclusion: Restate your thesis using different words. It must convey all the main statements you made in the previous parts of your literary analysis, but also touch on the implied provisions of your arguments. Do not repeat what you have already said. Suggest the next step. Draw parallels between genre and context. Why do you think what youââ¬â¢ve read is important today? General recommendations. Choose a catchy, interesting name. You should not do this in the beginning of your writing. You can wait until your essay is fully written and the argument is formed and clear. Write in the present tense. Even if the text is written in different time. Write in the third person. Avoid pronouns I or you. Although, sometimes teachers allow students the use of the first or second person. In this case, you can discuss the characteristics of the text that most impressed you, or the reasons why the actions of the main characters seem plausible to you or not. Use literary terms. With their help, your work will look well-prepared, balanced and thoughtful. Here are some examples: allusion indirect or superficial references to famous characters or events; irony a contradiction in a person, a situation or circumstances that are not really what they seem; metaphor a kind of figurative language that states that a certain thing is something else, something that, in fact, is not. Use secondary sources. But keep in mind that they are called secondary for a reason. This is your work and it should not consist of some other personââ¬â¢s thoughts. Just use them as a support for your arguments. Some of them you can find here: MLA International Bibliography, Dictionary of Literary Biography, or ask your teacher. What NOT to do. Do not summarize. Your work should be an analysis, not a summary of the text. Do not confuse the words of the characters with the authors position. These are two mutually exclusive things your statements should concern only one of them. Stay away from plagiarism . Plagiarizing somebody elseââ¬â¢s work will be a complete fail of the task. Use your own head. Tips Be concise and make sure you have connected all your arguments and everything you have written with a thesis proposal. Make sure you understand the essay correctly before you start writing the analysis. Your first priority is to follow the instructions and recommendations of your teacher. Before submitting your essay youââ¬â¢d better carefully and slowly review your work to make sure that you do not inadvertently use other peoples thoughts. In other words, check for plagiarism. Stay away from using the same words and statements over and over again. Because it will seem like you do not have much to say and your argument will seem weak. Literary Analysis FAQ What should my papers title be? It depends on what you are writing about, but it is definitely not supposed to be a title of the book you are writing about or ââ¬Å"English Paperâ⬠. It should represent the idea of your essay to the reader. How much plot should I include? Almost none. Imagine that everyone knows what the book is about but does not know its meaning. How many quotations should I use in my paper? Use one or two quotations in each body paragraph. Essay Help. Howard Shultz essays
Howard Shultz essays Howard Schultz, founder of Starbucks, was born in 1952 and raised in a Brooklyn, NY housing-project. At the age of twenty, he was unsure about what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Growing up in a fairly poor family, Schultz knew that he wanted to make a better life for himself; he did not want to be burdened with financial problems. Schultz had a very unique entrepreneurial drive to try to improve himself and his standing in life, because he did not want to be part of that class of people who did not have access to the American dream. It took Schultz a year to convince the Starbucks owners to hire him. When they finally made him director of marketing and operations in 1982, he had another epiphany. He introduced the idea of not only serving coffee, but also transforming Starbucks into a coffee bar- a meeting place with a comfortable environment to enjoy coffee. But in Seattle, the Starbucks owners resisted Schultzs plans to serve coffee in their stores, saying they didnt want to get into the restaurant business. Frustrated, Schultz quit and started his own coffee-bar business, called II Giornale. It was so successful, that a year later Schultz bought Starbucks for $3.8 million. The company began with eleven Seattle stores and fewer than one hundred employees. Schultz has since led Starbucks to become a half billion-dollar company. Schultzs mission for Starbucks is to establish the company as the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world while maintaining our uncompromising principles while we grow.(Mission Statement) Howard Schultz manages his company based on the following guiding principles: 1) Provide a great work environment, 2) Embrace diversity, 3) Highest standards of excellence to the purchasing, roasting, and fresh delivery of our coffee, 4) Develop satisfied customers, 5) Contribute positively to our communities and our environment, and 6) Recognize that profita...

Anthropology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 5
Anthropology - Essay Example The main reason why mating between different species is not encouraged is because the resulting offspring is usually not as fit as the parent species. However, this is not always the case if we take an example of the ancient man where the Homo sapiens and the Homo erectus interbred to produce viable offspring with a higher brain capacity (Douglas). Reproductive isolation mechanisms that exist make some individuals incapable of fertile interbreeding. This occurs when the interbreeding leads to offspring that are not viable. The word capable here means that the organisms are free and willing to mate naturally to reproduce. It is true that the anatomy of many organisms qualifies their ability or inability to mate. However, if there is no reproductive isolation, organisms of different species are capable of fertile interbreeding. The dog and the wolf are both from the same group, Canis, and they have the capability and desire to interbreed because they are closely related and their offspring are viable. For instance, taking the German Shepherds as an example, they are cross breed of dogs and wolves and they are known for their high intelligence, strength, and obedience training. An example of an infertile offspring is the mule- a result of the interbreeding between a horse and a donkey. This clearly shows that, fertile interbreedi ng between two distinct species should not be considered a surprise. This is because it does not matter whichever species two organisms come from as long as a fertile offspring is

Brand Positioning Statement Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Brand Positioning Statement - Coursework Example This strategy of management evolved the idea of printing one-liners on the packing covers of different products set for sale. These promotional lines silently acknowledge the advantages with indications of different variable of purchase ranging from the name of the product to its value expectations. The statements pose implications of comparative references of the product with similar ones of various other contender companies and influence the buying choices made by the customer. These powerful but composed lines are beneficial to the company as it saves time of the sales executives in a busy environment while they provide for the independent choice of information search preferred by customers to hectic and stereotypic listening process forced on them. Successful descriptive has always enhanced the sales volume of many products; majority of them were one-liner tags that influenced people who eventually utter the taglines as they demand a new brand at retail sales spots. Most importan tly, they assure the committed narratives of the product prior to the final choice made by the customer to buy it or ignore. However, brand positioning statements are the most visible logic that helps promote business and pose and intellectual domination of the product over its substitutes in the market. The following is an example of a set of brand positioning statements Segway HTÃ ® could have used for the product launch. The brand positioning statement of Segway HTÃ ® may be designed in the following way. The Segway HTÃ ® is a two-wheeled electronic human transporter that is governed the inbuilt gyroscopes and tilt sensors. The Segway HT Ã ® meets the self-transporting demands of employees and student to regularly travel short distances with provisions for electronically guiding the machine through busy and uneven tracks without loss of time stuck at traffic jams. The Segway HTÃ ® enables the mobility of people with least minimum operative input requirement for commanding th e speed and direction of the motion. The SEgway HTÃ ® is a digitally speed-governed sophisticated machine with an exclusive option of control switches to regulate the speed of the motion relative to the nature of surface and track environment. The Segway HTÃ ® assures easy operation of the machine with suggestion for perfect training for excellent use. The Segway HTÃ ® is powered by dual back up of energy sources for uninterrupted transport unlike other machines of human transport. The Segway HTÃ ® gives the best value for money with the longest endurance among all handy transport machines. (Source: Brandeo). The action plan The operational management is required to frame a target oriented action plan to meet the challenges expected to develop in the market segment with absolute concern for improving the sales of the product. An innovative venture should always be confidentially managed before the finalization of design and market research details. As an essential platform for e asy sales of the product, it is important to conduct surveys on the demand of the product among people of different cities and their ability to buy them. The final plan of the design as well as the price fixation needs to be carried out independently by the concerned departments, but focus should be kept on the universal applicability of the product. In case of a human transporter, the marketing challenges are mainly the social issues like high traffic, damaged pavements and unpredictable conditions of crowding

Computer Networks And Internet Protocol Television Essay Example for Free
Computer Networks And Internet Protocol Television Essay The advent of computer has changed the way the world moves. Distance factor is no longer a problem. The physical might appear a big place with things at far off places but the world in virtual form doesnââ¬â¢t believe in distance. Everything can be achieved within minutes if not seconds. The whole technology behind this mega change is based on computer and is termed as Information Technology. This technology has led to the creation of a cyber world or electronically generated world with the help of computers connected to each other through suitable wires. Now words like cybercafe, cyber chat, cyberspace, cyber shopping, etc. have started making rounds. People can send electronic mails to far off places within seconds. Details and information are getting transferred within few seconds. People in Shanghai and New York are just seconds away. Transferring data in electronic form is actually the fastest way to transfer things. Itââ¬â¢s not only the message transfer that has been revolutionized but also the business world. There are virtual shopping malls with website offering you a range of products ranging from computer peripherals to groceries. Companies are now providing details of their product through their website and are accepting customersââ¬â¢ requests of information and now even orders for products are being accepted. Everything is available. Money transfer can easily be done through wire transfer techniques. People do not wait. This world is not ruled by armed soldiers or any nuclear weapon. Itââ¬â¢s the information which rules. The physical world just has to react on the outcome. Its role is just for receiving and sending. This high performing virtual world has made significant change in the performance of the actual world (Tanenbaum, 2003). Things in real world are now easier to comprehend. Outsourcing has helped in accessing low cost labor in far off Asian nations like India and China. Multinational companies like Microsoft, IBM, GM. , GE etc. have offices in almost in each part of the world with performance of each of these units can be monitored from any of its offices. Their offices have been networked though LANs i. e. , Local Area Network and WANs i. e. , Wide Area Network. They have virtually made themselves available to their customers any time anywhere and just a click away (Tanenbaum, 2003). 2. Computer System Network of computers A computer system and network of computers are actually two different but interrelated things. A computer system is just a normal computer including peripherals and software necessary for the functioning of the device (Webopedia). But if we talk of Computer Network, it can be defined in a very simple way as a network of computers (Princeton). But giving full importance to all factors getting into act when we talk about network, the definition which actually makes complete sense is none other than the two or more computers connected together to share hardware, software and data and has been implemented according to some topology (Tanenbaum, 2003). The network can have all peripherals located within an office or building. This arrangement is often termed as Local Area Network or LAN (Tech, 2006). If the same is achieved in a wide area i. e. , computers connected to the network are located at places as diverse as countries in different continents, we can call the same as Wide Area Network or WAN (Cisco, 2006). Calling all computers and other intelligent parts of it as nodes, the term network topology can be defined as patterns of links connecting a pair of nodes of a network. 3. Internet Protocol IPTV Technology related television services which include uplink and transmission has seen some of very revolutionary inventions of modern science. The television delivery system has now moved from terrestrial transmission through analog signals to encrypted digital signals through internet as well as IPTV (Anderson, 2006). The entertainment world through television is now very much eager to move from TV being delivered through cable to Internet Protocol Television with content being viewed through technologies used for computer networks (Lu, 2006). The last decade of the 20th century witnessed the massive growth in Internet Protocol based services. Now with the fast development of hardware and software technologies, this internet world has now developed to accommodate services like VoIP and many other telecom products (Wikipedia, 2007). It is a system which delivers digital television services to registered subscribers in a managed network with address based technology. The unique IP address of a subscriber provides him a virtual address over a network and creates a connection between the service provider and the television (Wikipedia, 2007). 4. Television through IPTV: a new experience IPTV is going to give the most electrifying experience to its subscribers. Itââ¬â¢s not just seamless TV viewing but also more interactive and personalized. Things like participation in a game show or any discussion board will only require the use of the remote while sitting on the couch. Now the user will not feel being bombarded with a long list of channels rather get a very creative option to receive them with a much richer experience (International Engineering Consortium, 2007). The two-way signal broadcasting system through the network over which IPTV depends, allows the viewers to make selection that too on demand with time shift option. The additional services which can also be incorporated with IPTV are the Web Browsing i. e. surfing the internet, gaming with a game console with the current system and finally the communication applications which can enable email, MMS, Chat, etc (Telecom Italia, 2006). Figure 1 (IPTV delivery Infrastructure) The Set-Top Box which has made this IPTV happen which at one end is connected to the TV set while the other end to an ADSL connection can easily be made to supply Broadcast TV services (BTV) as well as Video On Demand (VOD) services. This BTV facilitates the simultaneous reception by the users of a traditional TV channel. And using multicasting protocols IPTV can make available services which are similar to experiences of a traditional TV like Free-to-air or Pay TV or a Pay-Per-view service (Luarel Networks). The same IPTV can be used by service providers to provide the VOD service which is made available on request. The VOD service requires implementation through IP unicast protocols (Ericsson, 2006). The enhanced IPTV can also make Personal Video Recorder (PVR) services available. The local PVR makes way for video-recording on the STB hard-disk with another set of functions for live, pause and replay. Similarly the Network-based PVR stores the data on the operatorââ¬â¢s server which is generally used for VOD (International Engineering Consortium, 2007). On technological point, the IPTV makes way for better utilization of available infrastructure like the bandwidth. Traditional transmission technology actually sends more than hundred channels simultaneously while the IPTV requires just one channel to be sent to the subscriber at a time. Every time the user selects a channel or a program, a new streaming takes place with data related to the newly selected channel (Anderson, 2006). 5. IPTV: More Advantages, More services More Business The IPTV will lead to a very new level of interactivity among Internet and data mainly as voice and video. A cable based TV network beams data in form of video mostly in MPEG format through an explicit bandwidth portion while the internet which enables high speed data transfer works on an IP based network and the data transfer is based on packets rather than streams. Both the technologies are technically very different. This IPTV is an amalgam of both the successful technologies. Being a data-centric application, the packets over this network can deliver both video as well as data (International Engineering Consortium, 2007). Figure 2: Telecommunications IPTV system solution The traditional cable network is often overloaded with more than 100 channels being transmitted simultaneously. So there is a limitation of maximum number of channels that can be made available to the subscriber. IPTV has a very clear advantage (Times News Network, 2006). Theoretically this technology can make almost infinite number of channels at the customerââ¬â¢s disposal. The transmission line actually transmitted a single channel which has been demanded by the customer. So the infrastructure usage per customer is negligible while opening a new era of almost every channel on the planet being made available to the user. The IP technology being a packet based product requires an acknowledgement to be sent to the source for every packet. This ensures that every packet sent by the source should remain intact and any loss of data will require resending of the same packet. This feature ensures very high quality of the product which the subscriber will receive (Anderson, 2006). The advantages associated to IPTV is not just conventional entertainment and advertisement based business but the technology can have its usage in developing new products which can make way to many other forms of businesses. The web based training is one of the many other possibilities. The IPTV network can be used to run different courses by making the videos of the classes available to the registered students (International Engineering Consortium, 2007). IPTV is the next big thing after telecom and internet. The business possibilities associated with this technology is almost as broad as the human thought. Almost all telecom companies are putting big money in exploration and marketing of this product (Blau, 2005). The business network and the corporate LANââ¬â¢s may be greatest beneficiary with the delivery of videos and television content. The customized content delivery and the extremely secure network will reduce the theft cases to negligible. Customization facility will help the advertisers to understand the behavior of consumers and then will go for personalized ads that will translate into significant business returns (Iyer, 2005). 6. Conclusion The IPTV is going to be the next big thing in communication and media industry. With money pouring inform all big telecom companies IPTV is going to be a very serious business with entertainment becoming more and more customizable. The subscriber will experience a very different medium of entertainment with highest level of interactivity and almost innumerable possible services that too very much on his own wishes. 7. Organising tour for Signed Act :: essays research papers
In order to organise a tour for a signed act, it takes the efforts of management, the record company, agent and promoter. Although each have their individual responsibilities and ways of working it is required of them to work together as a team in order to make a tour possible, or even for just one gig. They each contribute an essential part of the process and organisational strategies and without co-operation of each unit organising a tour would be practically impossible. Disagreements could cause much of an inconvenience and the music industry being so large with so many people disagreements are not uncommon as everyone has their own opinion. Compromise is perhaps the only key, therefore working with open minded people makes it much easier. Often the job descriptions of each unit intersect and are hard to define, which can sometimes be helpful as different people can do the same job from different angles, however it can also get confusing and cause problems often being the result of communicational breakdowns. In this essay we shall study what each unit does and how they work together looking at the advantages and disadvantages of certain aspects and perhaps discuss ways in which the system could be improved. Management The management company works with the artist more so than anyone else. They play a dominant role in their interaction with people in the music industry (agents, promoters, record labels). Their own interaction with the artist is direct and they often have a freindly relationship with the artist. I spoke to an unsigned rock band with a management contract to find out exactly what they do for them. Their management company were an established music company who create music for adverts and therefore have knowledge and contacts within the industry. They provide the band with financial backing for equipment, recording sessions and any other finances to support the band. They also act as an agent for the band and book gigs by contacting promoters and promoters also often contact them. Their relationship with the band is very friendly and are on terms were they both work for each other. Their management push and motivate the band to work as hard as they can to improve their material and perhaps influence it to be what a record company might want to hear. They are usually responsible for any exposure the band receive, for example interviews, airtime, music journals etc.

The sculpture Bodhisattva
The sculpture Bodhisattva had the strongest impact upon me for various reasons. This piece, found in the Silk Road Chicago collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a cross-cultural work with obvious Eastern and Western influences. This sculpture is a beautiful 2nd to 3rd century A. D. piece that depicts a man standing in obvious deep meditation. This model was created in the region of Gandhara, which is modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan. This early representation of a Buddha-like figure is a unique and powerful image. The title, Bodhisattva, can be directly translated from Sanskrit as meaning a ââ¬Å"spiritual essence or being.â⬠This figure is an interpretation of a sacred being that has delayed its own nirvana in order to help others reach the spiritual plane. The adornments that this figure wears are representative of its delay to the spiritual realm. Wearing material and worldly items means that it has not transcended yet. This type of commitment is impressive and th e figure is blessed with the incredible ability to be in a state between both worlds. The figure in the sculpture has an awe-like power over the viewer. It makes you feel as if you are looking at an object that attains holy attributes.Although, the sculpture has divine qualities, it also makes the viewer feel able to relate to it. It is humanized in a way that differs from other Buddha representations. This makes the impact of the work even stronger. An inner strength is portrayed that varies from the traditional at rest Buddha that is found in most artwork. This figure has power, but it is not menacing. It is serene and this serenity is transferred to the viewer of the piece. It is easy to see how these types of figures transcended into what is now modern-day Buddhism. The bodhisattvas were ancient spiritual beings that were worshipped. The collective group of these became the Buddha figure that is widely known today. The detail of this sculpture is incredible. Despite its age, the particulars of the piece have remained blissfully intact. The hands are missing, but it is possible to guess at how they were placed in the sculpture. The right hand was most likely raised and assuming a gesture of reassurance. An object found in the left hand would determine the type of bodhisattva. There is realism in the depiction that makes the viewer feel that they are gazing upon an actual interpretation. Unlike other bodhisattva pieces, this work feels more based on a real person.Despite the Eastern subject matter, there is little doubt that there is Western influence apparent in this piece. ââ¬Å"The art of this region experienced a type of merger with Greek influences after Alexander the Great conquered the region in the 4th century B. C. â⬠(Rowland, 1960, 8). An example of this found in the Bodhisattva is clear in the figureââ¬â¢s intricate robes. These types of folds are traditionally found in Greek and Roman artistic depictions. The drapery reminds the viewer o f the togas worn by the figures in the sculptures of Roman imperials. The chest of the figure is also reminiscent of the merger of these two cultures. It is a more realistic portrayal with the muscular indentations found upon the figureââ¬â¢s chest. Eastern portrayals had less defined bodies in their works. The Indian traditions of the sculpture are displayed in the figureââ¬â¢s mustache and the dhori that he wears. The dual influences of this work made the most significant impact upon me. It is rare to see a piece that has such obvious Eastern and Western elements found in the manifestation. This cross-cultural work is a harmonious interpretation of a strong spiritual figure. Additionally, it has a strong religious impact. It is a documentation of how Buddhism made it way from India into China. When looking at the sculpture, it is unavoidable that you are not moved at how this is exposing a historical occurrence. The stone material of the piece lends power to the idea that this is a strong figure that is tied to the material world, but has the ability to guide people to their own nirvana. The lasting material makes the viewer feel as though they are looking at a spiritual piece that has transcended through the ages. Buddha is an important figure in artwork and it is essential to know how this form came into being.
